Theodore Alan "Ted" Coyle

Captain, U.S. Navy



Theodore Alan Coyle was born on 20 December 1950, in Key West, FL, to Robert Moore and Geraldine Shaffer-Coyle of Carlisle, PA. Ted's father, a career Navy Chief, moved the family frequently throughout the U.S. until finally settling in Charleston, SC. Ted attended St Andrew's High School and went on to complete a year of college at Newberry College.

In 1970, Ted was accepted to the U.S. Naval Academy and upon his graduation on 5 June 1974, was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. After his initial sea tour on the Nuclear Attack Submarine USS Jack, his follow-on sea tours were the aircraft carriers USS Independence and the USS Kennedy. His last assignment was as Commanding Officer, Defense Fuel Region and Defense Logistics Agency - Pacific located in Honolulu, HI. Ted retired on 1 July 1997 after 23 years of service in the Navy.

His personal awards included five Meritorious Service Medals, five Commendation Medals and one Achievement Medal and twelve Unit / Campaign Awards.

After his retirement from the Navy, Ted worked for British Petroleum, Anchorage, AK; Southern California Edison, Los Angeles, CA; Hexcel, Kent, WA; and then Vice President of Operations and Supply Chain for AVChem, St. Charles, MO.

Captain Theodore Alan Coyle died on 15 April 2010, surrounded by his family at their home in St. Charles.

Ted is survived by his wife, Mary Mason-Coyle; children Jeffrey Alan (Sasha), Kelly Jean, Michael Andrew, David Douglas and Theodore Robert. Grandchildren include Eli, Cope and Jack. Ted is also survived by his sister, Lesley Coyle Kelly of Beaufort, SC; and his mother, Geraldine Marian Coyle; with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
