Robert Joe Cope was born on 8 January 1947.

On 19 April 1967, Lance Corporal Robert Joe Cope was serving with 1st Platoon, H Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division, III Marine Amphibious Force, in Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, Lance Corporal Cope was killed in action when he sustained wounds from small arms fire. His body was recovered.
