On 28 July 1969, Hospital Corpsman Third Class Michael Norris Colton was serving with Headquarters & Service Company, 3rd Tank Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Amphibious Force, in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, HM3 Colton was killed in action when he sustained wounds from an explosive device. His body was recovered.
