William Henry Clevenger William Henry Clevenger was born on 30 August 1919. During World War II, then-Private William Henry Clevenger was serving with a Field Artillery Battalion in the 34th Infantry Division in Tunisia. Under heavy German shell fire, one of the howitzers received a direct hit that killed a member of the crew, wounded several men, ignited a number of powder charges, and set fire to a box of hand grenades. PVT Clevenger, together with an officer and 4 enlisted men, extinguished the fire in the box of hand grenades with water and shovels, although there was danger of the box exploding. PVT Clevenger's gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army. He was awarded the U.S. Army's third highest award for valor, the Silver Star Medal.On 6 June 1969, Command Sergeant Major William Henry Clevenger was serving with Headquarters & Headquarters Battalion, 7th Battalion, 11th Artillery Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in Tay Ninh Province, South Vietnam. Medals and Awards Silver Star Medal Silver Star Medal Citation The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private William Clevenger, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with a Field Artillery Battalion of the 34th Infantry Division in Tunisia.
