Frederick Hayes Michaelis Admiral, U.S. Navy Frederick Hayes Michaelis was born on 4 March 1917 in Kansas City, MO. Michaelis graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1940 and was assigned to the USS Pennsylvania. After surviving the attack on Pearl Harbor, he became an aviator. In World War II, he was assigned to Attack Squadron 12, which he eventually commanded. Following the war he was involved in the development of nuclear weapons and was assigned to the USS Hornet. He later served on the staff of the Commander, Naval Air Forces, and with the Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Air). He was Executive Officer of the USS Randolph before being given command of the USS Tolovana. After serving with the Chief of Naval Operations, he became the second Commanding Officer of the USS Enterprise, the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, during the Vietnam War. He also served as Commander, Naval Air Force U.S. Atlantic Fleet. On 19 April 1975, Michaelis was promoted to the four-star rank of Admiral and was assigned as Chief of the Office of Naval Material. Admiral Michaelis retired from the Navy in 1978. He was a recipient of the Navy Cross. Personal He married Rose Schiche of Lake Geneva, WI, with whom he had three children. Death and Burial Admiral Frederick Hayes Michaelis died on 13 August 1992, in Washington, DC, and is buried with his wife at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA. |
