Woodrow Wilson Bailey On 30 June 1944, then-Major Woodrow Wilson Bailey was serving with 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, First U.S. Army in the European Theater of Operations. On that day, MAJ Bailey's unit was in action against German forces. MAJ Bailey's courageous actions and extraordinary heroism, at the eventual cost of his life, earned him the U.S. Army's second highest award for valor, the Distinguished Service Cross. On 21 August 1944, Major Bailey Died of Wounds received during the battle for which he was awarded the DSC. Bailey (ASN: 0-327993), United States Army, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 30 June 1944. Major Bailey's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
