Captain, U.S. Army

Sean Patrick Sims was born in Taipei City, Taiwan, the son of U.S. Army Colonel Thomas L. and Laura Ivey Sims of McKinney and El Paso, TX. He graduated from Texas A&M University with the Class of 1994, where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets, the Ross Volunteers, Ranger Challenge and was commander of Company L-2. Sims graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and received a Distinguished Military Graduate commission as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry in the U.S. Army.

2LT Sims was the top graduate in his platoon at the Infantry Officer's Basic Course, and then attended the Airborne School, Pathfinder Course, and Ranger School. He was then assigned to the 101st Airmobile Division as a platoon leader and Company Executive Officer. He later attended the Armor Officers Course and followed that with an assignment to Germany where he was assigned to the Seventh Army Training Center at Grafenwoehr. After one year he was transferred to the 1st Division in Vilseck where he spent the rest of the time as Brigade and Battalion Staff Officer, including ten months with the 1st Division deployed to Kosovo. in February 2004, CPT Sims deployed to Iraq.

In November 2004, then-Captain Sean Patrick Sims was serving as Commanding Officer, Company A, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division while deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom

During that month, CPT Sims’ unit was engaged in combat action against enemy forces near Fallujah, Iraq. CPT Sims planned and executed the task force's main attack against entrenched enemy forces, then held position under constant fire to establish a foothold in northeast Fallujah. CPT Sims led a 14-hour house-to-house fight, frequently leaving the safety of his Bradley Fighting Vehicle, then led a fight to seize, then hold Highway 10 against constant enemy counterattack. CPT Sims' company killed more than 40 enemy fighters, destroyed 35 homemade bombs and a dozen weapons caches. On 13 November, CPT Sims was shot and killed while clearing a building in Fallujah. CPT Sims’ courageous actions that day earned him the U.S. Army's third highest award for valor, the Silver Star Medal.

Silver Star Medal Citation (Synopsis)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Sean Patrick Sims, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with the 2d Battalion, 2d Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, during combat action against enemy forces in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM near Fallujah, Iraq, during November 2004. Captain Sims planned and executed the task force's main attack against entrenched enemy forces, then held position under constant fire to establish a foothold in northeast Fallujah. He led a 14-hour house-to-house fight, frequently leaving the safety of his Bradley fighting vehicle, then led a fight to seize, then hold Highway 10 against constant enemy counterattack. His company killed more than 40 enemy fighters, destroyed 35 homemade bombs and a dozen weapons caches. He was shot and killed while clearing a building in Fallujah 13 November 2004. Captain Sims' gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
