Michael Yury Tarlavsky Michael Yury Tarlavsky was born in the Republic of Latvia, a part of the former Soviet Union. His family moved to the United States in 1979 when he was 5 years old. On 12 August 2004, Captain Michael Yury Tarlavsky was serving with the 1st Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) U.S. Army. On that day, CPT Tarlavsky’s unit was in action against Iraqi forces during combat operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. CPT Tarlavsky distinguished himself when his unit came under small arms fire and grenade attack in Najaf, Iraq. CPT Tarlavsky’s selfless, courageous actions and devotion to duty that day earned him, at the cost of his life, the U.S. Army's third highest award for valor, the Silver Star Medal. Captain Tarlavsky distinguished himself when his unit came under small arms fire and grenade attack in Najaf, Iraq.
