Michael Yury Tarlavsky
Captain, U.S. Army

Michael Yury Tarlavsky was born in the Republic of Latvia, a part of the former Soviet Union. His family moved to the United States in 1979 when he was 5 years old.

On 12 August 2004, Captain Michael Yury Tarlavsky was serving with the 1st Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) U.S. Army.

On that day, CPT Tarlavsky’s unit was in action against Iraqi forces during combat operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. CPT Tarlavsky distinguished himself when his unit came under small arms fire and grenade attack in Najaf, Iraq. CPT Tarlavsky’s selfless, courageous actions and devotion to duty that day earned him, at the cost of his life, the U.S. Army's third highest award for valor, the Silver Star Medal.

Silver Star Medal Citation (Synopsis)

Captain (Infantry) Michael Yury Tarlavsky, United States Army, was awarded the Silver Star (Posthumously) for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the 1st Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), during combat operations in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, on 12 August 2004, in Iraq. Captain Tarlavsky distinguished himself when his unit came under small arms fire and grenade attack in Najaf, Iraq. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

Captain Michael Yury Tarlavsky is buried at the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Arlington County, VA, in Section 60, Site 7996.
