On 28 June 1966, Private First Class Donald Edward Byrum was serving with A Company, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in South Vietnam.

On that day, PFC Byrum was killed in action when he sustained multiple fragmentation wounds. His body was recovered.
