On 9 August 1968, Specialist Four Robert Oscar Bumiller was serving with C Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, SP4 Bumiller was killed by misadventure (friendly fire). His body was recovered.
