John Rex Bartlett was born on 1 August 1947 in Vallejo, CA.

On 18 January 1969, Specialist Four John Rex Bartlett was serving as an aircrew member with 175th Helicopter Assault Company, 13th Aviation Battalion, 164th Aviation Group, 1st Aviation Brigade in Phong Dinh Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, SP4 Bartlett was killed in a helicopter crash. His body was recovered. He received a posthumous promotion to Sergeant.
