On 20 July 1968, Sergeant Alan F. Angell was serving with E Company, 51st Infantry Regiment (Rangers), Americal Division, in Quang Tin Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, SGT Angell was killed in action when he sustained multiple fragmentation wounds.
