He served in the U.S. Navy as a Corpsman during World War II and was on Okinawa the second day of invasion. After the war, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served during the Korean War. During the Vietnam War, he was NCO in charge of the Casualty Staging Unit at Travis Air Force Base in California.
