Robert Russell Williams Robert Russell Williams was born on 27 June 1911 in Syracuse, NY. During World War II, Williams was commander of the submarine USS Finback. On receiving a message of a downed aircraft, he ordered the USS Finback to the scene where future U.S. President George H. W. Bush was rescued after the Japanese shot down his Avenger torpedo plane on 2 September 1944. Death and Burial Captain Robert Russell Williams died on 19 August 1993 in Bethesda, MD. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. |
