Benjamin Alvord Spiller Benjamin Alvord Spiller was born on 8 November 1918 in South Carolina. He entered the U.S. Military Academy in 1937 and graduated with the Class of 1941. His first military assignment was as a student in the Anti-Aircraft Course at Fort Monroe, VA, in 1941. He then served as Battery Officer, 71st Coast Artillery Anti-Aircraft, Fort Story, VA, 1941-42; Battery Commander, 71st Coast Artillery Anti-Aircraft, 1942-43; and Battery Commander, 508th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion, Camp Stewart, GA, 1943-44. Spiller served with 508th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion in New Guinea and Philippines during 1944-45; and as Operations Officer, 120th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Group, 1945. Spiller served with G-4 (Supply) Section, Headquarters Army Forces Western Pacific, 1945-46; and instructor, Delaware National Guard, 1947-49. He was a student at the Artillery School during 1949-50; was Executive Officer, 552d Anti-Aircraft Battalion in 1950; and a student at the Command & General Staff School in 1953-54. He served with Headquarters Army Element, North American Air Defense Command from 1960-63; was a student at the Army War College from 1963-64; and a student at Stanford University from 1964-66. From 1967-69 Colonel Spiller was Information Officer, Army Air Defense Command. He retired from the Army in 1969. Personal Colonel Spiller is the great grandson of Benjamin Alvord, Brigadier General, U.S. Army, and the grandson of Benjamin Alvord, Jr., Brigadier General, U.S. Army. He is the son of Oliver Loving Spiller, Brigadier General, U.S. Army. Death and Burial Colonel Benjamin Alvord Spiller died on 23 May 1993 in Colorado Springs, CO. He is buried next to his father, Brigadier General Oliver Loving Spiller, U.S Army, at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. |
