Walter Lowry Small Walter Lowry Small was born on 31 October 1916 in Elizabeth City, NC. Small graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1938. During World War II, he commanded the submarines, USS Flying Fish, USS Sterlet and USS Batfish. In 1959, he was Commanding Officer of the Fulton-class submarine USS Sperry. Small was the Commander Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, from June 1968 to October 1970. He was responsible for the administration, training, logistic support, and material readiness of the submarines in the Pacific Fleet. Additionally, he was the operational commander of most of the Pacific attack submarines and of the strategic deterrent provided by the Fleet Ballistic Missiles of the Pacific Polaris forces. For Small's exceptional leadership in his commands, he was awarded the Navy Cross. Death and Burial Rear Admiral Walter Lowry Small died on 15 June 2004. He is buried at the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis, MD. |
