William Sherbrooke Popham William Sherbrooke Popham was born on 8 May 1892 in Perth Amboy, NJ. Popham graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1914. He served in World War I with the Atlantic Fleet and first came to Charleston, SC, in 1918. The following year he attended Submarine School and commanded two submarines before returning to Charleston as aide to the Commandant from 1923-25. In 1925 he was transferred to the aircraft carrier, USS Lexington. In 1933 he entered the U.S. Naval War College and in 1935 served aboard the submarine tender USS Holland. He served aboard the heavy cruiser USS Chicago in 1936 and was transferred in 1937 to the Office of Naval Intelligence in Washington, DC. During World War II, Popham commanded assault squadrons at Lingayen Gulf in the South China Seas and Iwo Jima and the initial landing at Amori. At the close of the war, he served as second in command in the occupation of Japan. After the war, he returned to Charleston as Administrative Officer at the Navy Shipyard and retired in 1947. He was a member of the New York Society of the Cincinnati, the St. Cecilia Society, and the Charleston Club. Death and Burial Rear Admiral William Sherbrooke Popham died on 14 August 1977 in Charleston, SC. He is buried at Old Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church Cemetery in Charleston. |
