Charles Henry Muir Major General, U.S. Army Charles Henry Muir was born on 18 July 1860 in Erie, MI. Muir graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1885 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry. He then served in the 14th Infantry during the Indian Wars. He held first place in the Army Rifle Team in 1890. In 1895, he attended the Cavalry School at Fort Leavenworth, KS, and graduated at the head of his class. In the Philippine Insurrection, with only ten companions, he attacked Rosario on 19 January 1900, captured the city and released 300 Spanish prisoners. Promoted to Brigadier General in August 1917, during World War I he commanded a Division at the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, France, led the IV Corps into Germany and served with the Army of Occupation until April 1919. He retired a Major General in the Regular Army in July 1924. Medals and Awards During the Spanish-American War, he received the Distinguished Service Cross for gallantry in action at Santiago de Cuba. Honors The Navy transport ship USS General C.H. Muir (AP-142) was named in his honor. Death and Burial Major General Charles Henry Muir died on 8 December 1933 in Baltimore, MD. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. |
