George Steve Morrison George Steve Morrison was born on 7 January 1919 in Rome, GA. He was a U.S. Navy officer who was largely over shadowed by his son, Jim Morrison, of the 1960's rock group "The Doors." He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD, in 1942, was commissioned an Ensign and served in the Pacific Theater for the duration of World War II. In 1966, he was the youngest officer in the Navy to be promoted to Rear Admiral and later served as Commander of U.S. Naval Forces in the Marianas. Serving in the Vietnam War, he dealt with the 140,000 South Vietnamese refugees after the fall of Saigon in April 1975 and created a tent city on an abandoned airfield to accommodate them while they waited to find new homes in the U.S. He retired from active service in August 1975. In 1990, Rear Admiral Morrison visited his son's grave in Paris, France, and had a plaque installed. Death Rear Admiral George Steve Morrison died of natural causes on 17 November 2008 in Coronado, CA. His remains were cremated and the ashes scattered at sea off Point Loma, CA. |
