John Kemp Mizner John Kemp Mizner was born in 1834 in New York. Mizner started his military career on 1 July 1856, as a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy. As a First Lieutenant, he served on the plains with the 2nd U.S. Dragoons from February 1857 to May 1861. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was promoted to Captain in the 2nd U.S. Cavalry on 12 November 1861. On 7 March 1862, he was appointed Colonel in command of the 3rd Michigan Volunteer Cavalry. He led the 3rd Cavalry through the Mississippi campaigns and for gallant and meritorious service in the battle of Corinth and action at Panola, he was brevetted Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers on 13 March 1865. After the war he mustered out of the volunteer service on 12 February 1866, remaining in the 4th U.S. Cavalry as a Major. Sent to the Great Plains in 1869, he fought in the Indian Wars, was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the 8th U.S. Cavalry on 9 January 1886, and to Colonel of the 10th U.S. Cavalry on 15 April 1890. Leaving the frontier he served in Washington, DC, on the Army General Staff as Cavalry Officer and was promoted to Brigadier General, U.S. Army, on 26 May 1897. He retired from active duty on 7 June 1897 after over 40 years of military service. Death and Burial Brigadier General John Kemp Mizner died on 9 September 1898 in Washington, DC. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. |
