Preston Menoher Preston Menoher was born on 12 November 1892 at Fort Monroe, Hampton, VA. He was the son of Major General Charles Thomas Menoher, U.S. Army, and Nannie Pearson Menoher. Menoher graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1915, a classmate of Dwight D. Eisenhower. He served with the Fifteenth Corps, which became part of General George Patton's Third Army in its drive through Europe in World War II. He was Chief of Staff of the Fifteenth Corps in May 1945 when it received the surrender of the German First Army near Munich. In the Korean Conflict he was Assistant Commander of the Twenty-Fourth Division and took temporary charge when Major General William F. Dean was captured. It was Menoher who told the story of General Dean's heroic stand against the North Korean Communists at Taejon, Korea, in July 1950. Medals and Awards Distinguished Service Medal (2 Awards) Personal In addition to his father, Menoher had two brothers who served in the military; Darrow (1896-1943), died during World War II as a Lieutenant Colonel; and William (1910-1978), was a career officer who retired as a Colonel in 1955. A third brother, Charles (1891-1922), was U.S. Military Academy Class of 1915. Death and Burial Brigadier General Preston Menoher died on 13 February 1958 at his home in Southern Pines, NC, after suffering a stroke. He was 65. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. He was survived by his wife, Laura Lee Ryer Menoher, who died in July 1979 and is buried with her husband. |
