George Elmore Ide George Elmore Ide was born on 6 December 1845 in Zanesville, OH, to Dr. William E. and Angeline Sullivan Ide. He entered the U.S. Naval Academy in 1861 and graduated with the Class of 1864. During the summers of 1862-1864, while a midshipman, he cruised after the Confederate steamers Tallahassee and Florida. He went to Greenland on USS Juniata in 1870, in search of Polaris survivors, and same year took Virginius filibusters from Santiago, Cuba, to New York. He served on USS Kenosha, which escorted the English ship Monarch to Portland, ME, in 1871, carrying the body of philanthropist George Peabody. He commanded the USS Justin off Santiago, during the Spanish-American War, and the USS New Orleans on Manila Station. He served as Captain of Navy Yard, Mare Island, CA, until 1901. He retired as a Rear Admiral. Personal Ide married Alexandra Louise Bruen on 28 July 1889 at Fortress Monroe, VA. Death and Burial Rear Admiral George Elmore Ide died on 12 February 1917. He is buried at John Jay Cemetery in Rye, NY. |
