George Eitel Hartman George Eitel Hartman was born on 4 January 1894 in Brookhaven, MS. Hartman received an education in Brookhaven, MS, and attended Southwestern University and Mississippi College before following his brother, Charles Dudley Hartman, in choosing a military career and entering the U.S. Army in 1917. As a Quartermaster officer, he was Senior Organizer and Chief of Logistics for Gen. Douglas MacArthur's island-hopping campaigns in the Pacific during World War II. He was awarded the Legion of Merit in 1942, when he was a Colonel, for successfully activating Fort Francis E. Warren, WY, in time to receive incoming trainees during a period of severe below-zero temperature. He served in the Quartermaster Corps until his retirement in 1954. Medals and Awards Legion of Merit He was a member of the Army-Navy Country Club and Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Personal Both Hartman brothers obtained the rank of Brigadier General by the time they retired from the Army, and they were interred beside one another in Arlington National Cemetery at the end of their lives, with full military honors. They would later be joined at Arlington by their spouses and Charles' son, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Dudley Hartman, Jr. Death and Burial Brigadier General George Eitel Hartman died on 1 July 1968 in Washington, DC. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. |
