Biography:

George Fleming
General, Continental Army

George Fleming's origins are unclear and his birthdate unknown. It is believed that he was born circa 1748 to a wealthy family living in Northern Ireland, or he was born in the Hudson Valley region of New York. But what is known for certain is that, as an adult, Fleming distinguished himself as a military man.

Fleming fought for American independence while in his late 20s and early 30s, taking on leadership roles in combat during the Revolutionary War, and in organizing and training militia, work which he continued into the post-war years. Fleming served in the Revolutionary War as a Captain, as well as serving at West Point and in the War of 1812.

All of Fleming's letters to George Washington are contained in the library at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, NY. Fleming was the first Commander of West Point and he advised Washington, and others, that an artillery school should be established at West Point. He did establish that artillery school at West Point.

Fleming originally came on Cayuga County, NY, while surveying tracts of land that were to be given to those that served in the Revolutionary War. He settled in Cayuga County in the 1790s and his home still stands on what is now Route 34B. Fleming was one of the Owasco Lake area's most prominent and highly regarded residents. Five months after his death at age 74, the Cayuga County town of Fleming (incorporated March 1823) was named to honor General George Fleming.

Death and Burial

George Fleming died on 2 October 1822 in the town that became Fleming, NY, five months after his death at age 74. He is buried at the North Street Cemetery in Auburn, NY.
