Joseph Francis Enright, Sr. Joseph Francis Enright, Sr. was born on 18 September 1910 in Minot, ND. Enright was a 1933 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. He entered the U.S. Submarine Service in 1936. During World War II, he was given command of the submarine USS Archerfish. On 29 November 1944, off the coast of Japan, the Archerfish sank the Japanese supercarrier Shinano, the largest ship ever sunk by a submarine. Some naval historians have reported that the Shinano had a final displacement of more than 69,000 tons. For this action, the Archerfish received a Presidential Unit Citation, and Captain Enright received the Navy Cross, the Navy's second highest award for valor. Enright served for 30 years on active duty in the U.S. Navy and retired 1 July 1963. In Retirement After retiring, he moved to Dover, MA, and worked on the Omega navigation program with Northrop Nortronics and later with Sanders Corporation of Nashua, NH. He authored the book, "Shinano! The Sinking of Japan's Secret Supership" in 1987. Death and Burial Captain Joseph Francis Enright, Sr. died on 20 July 2000 in Fairfax Hills, VA. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. |
