Israel Chapin Revolutionary War Israel Chapin was born on 4 December 1740 in Grafton, Worcester, MA, to Benjamin and Ann Rice Chapin. At the direction of George Washington, he summoned the Canandaigua Council, which led to the signing on 11 November 1794 of the Canandaigua Treaty, the final treaty between the six nations of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) and the U.S. Government. The general died a few months after the signing of the treaty at age 54, and Seneca Chief Red Jacket gave a moving condolence speech at his graveside. Personal Israel married Elizabeth Marsh and they had 8 children. Death and Burial General Israel Chapin died on 7 March 1795 in Buffalo Creek, NY. He is buried at Pioneer Cemetery in Canandaigua, NY. |
