On 16 August 1968, Seaman Joseph Boyce Adams was serving with MP Security Ops, Naval Support Activity Danang, U.S. Naval Forces Vietnam, in Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, SN Adams was killed in action when he sustained wounds from an explosive device. His body was recovered.
