Frank Woodruff Buckles Frank Woodruff Buckles was born on 1 February 1901 in Bethany, MO. He enlisted in the Army in 1917 at the age of 16 and served until 1920. He was stationed in England and France where he drove ambulances. In the 1940s he was a civilian employee of a shipping company in the Philippines when the Japanese seized control of the islands. He was held prisoner by the Japanese for three years. Buckles was the last living U.S. veteran of World War I. He died at the age of 110 years, 26 days. Death and Burial Corporal Frank Woodruff Buckles died on 27 February 2011 in Charles Town, WV. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. |
