Captain Cole was the pilot of a F4U-4B Corsair fighter with Headquarters Squadron, 12th Marine Air Group. On 19 May 1952, while on an operational test flight, his aircraft crashed killing him.

Cole was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
