Corporal Smith was a paratrooper with Company E, 2nd Battalion, 511th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 11th Infantry Division. He died while participating in a jump exercise during winter maneuvers at Camp Drum, New York on 10 February 1952.

Smith was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
