Mid-Shipman/Naval Aviation Cadet Hastings was a assigned to pre-flight training at Pensacola, Florida, to be commissioned Ensign upon graduation. On 26 July 1950, while flying a training aircraft, he collided with another over Loxley, Alabama.

Hastings was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
