George Augustus Bicknell George Augustus Bicknell was born in 1846 in New Jersey. The family later moved to Indiana where his father became a Judge and Congressman. Bicknell was an 1866 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. He served with the Asiatic Fleet 1868-1870. During the Spanish American War, he commanded the USS Niagara. Bicknell was a, instrumental in the conversion from wood to steel for U.S. Navy ships. He was promoted to Rear Admiral on 8 February 1907 and he retired on 15 May 1908. After his retirement, Bicknell and his wife, Anne Sloan Bicknell, converted the family home left to her by her parents, Dr. John and Mrs. Sloan, into what became, and remains, a famous inn: The Admiral Bicknell Inn in New Albany, IN. Death and Burial Rear Admiral George Augustus Bicknell died in 1925. He is buried at the Fairview Cemetery in New Albany, IN. |
