Private Shoemaker was a member of Company A, 79th Engineer Construction Battalion, U.S. Army. On 30 December 1950, he died of injuries incurred in a jeep accident near Tongnae, Korea.

Shoemaker was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
