First Lieutenant Smotherman was the pilot of a F-86F Sabrejet fighter bomber with the 12th Fighter Bomber Squadron, 18th Fighter Bomber Wing. On 31 May 1953, while on an operational mission, his aircraft crashed killing him.

Smotherman was awarded the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
