Private First Class Bunyard was a member of Company B, 4th Signal Battalion, U.S. Army. On 5 December 1951, he was a passenger in a vehicle that went out of control and went over an embankment 10 miles north of Wonju, South Korea.

Bunyard was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
