James Charles McConville

James Charles McConville of Quincy, MA, graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in the Class of 1981 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry in the Regular Army.

McConville's command assignments include command of an air cavalry troop in the 7th Infantry Division (Light) at Fort Ord, CA, command of 2-17 Cavalry in 101st Airborne Division (AASLT) at Fort Campbell, KY, and command of an air cavalry brigade in the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, TX. 

He commanded the 4th Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division in Iraq from 2004-2005 during Operation Iraqi Freedom and based on the heroism of his aviators and the tireless efforts of his Soldiers, his brigade was selected as the 2004 AAAA Aviation Unit of the Year. McConville served as the Deputy Commanding General (Support) for 101st Airborne Division (AASLT)/ CJTF-101/ Regional Command East in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom from 2008 to 2009.

McConville's key staff assignments include S-3 for Flight Concepts Division, S-3 for 5th Squadron, 9th Cavalry, S-3 for the 25th Combat Aviation Brigade, J5 Strategic Planner for the U.S. Special Operations Command, G-3 for the 101st Airborne Division (AASLT), Executive Officer to the Vice Chief of Staff of the Army, and Deputy Chief and Chief of the Office of Legislative Liaison. 

On 9 August 2019, General McConville assumed his current assignment as the 40th Chief of Staff of the Army. He served as the 36th Vice Chief of Staff of the Army from 16 June 2017 to 26 July 2019. Prior to that, he served as the Army's Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel (G1).
