On 12 February 1966, Lance Corporal Stephen Geoffrey Lord was serving with Headquarters & Service Company, 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Amphibious Force, in Quang Ngai Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, LCPL Lord was killed in action when he sustained wounds from small arms fire. His body was recovered.
