John Paul Klabunde was born on 5 August 1946.

On 6 September 1967, Lance Corporal John Paul Klabunde was serving with E Company, 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, LCPL Klabunde was killed in action when he sustained wounds from small arms fire. His body was recovered.
