George T. Robinson From 16-23 February 1944, Second Lieutenant George T. Robinson was serving with the 158th Field Artillery Battalion, 45th Infantry Division, Fifth U.S. Army. 2LT Robinson’s unit was in action against German forces in the Aprilia Sector, at Aprilia, Italy. On 16 February, a major German attack struck the 45th Division and nearly broke through the 179th Infantry on 18 February. However, U.S. Army Ranger leader Colonel William Orlando Darby was sent to assume command of the 157th Infantry, and the Germans were repulsed. 2LT Robinson’s courageous actions and extraordinary heroism during that time earned him, at the cost of his life, the U.S. Army's second highest award for valor, the Distinguished Service Cross. Robinson (ASN: 0-1178952), United States Army, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 158th Field Artillery Battalion, 45th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces from 16 to 22 February 1944. Second Lieutenant Robinson's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 45th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
