Howard R. Lieurance Howard R. Lieurance entered the U.S. Army at Syracuse, NY on 21 April 1941. On 27 October 1943, Second Lieutenant Howard R. Lieurance was serving with Company E, 135th Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, Fifth U.S. Army. That night, 2LT Lieurance’s unit was in action against German forces in Italy when he was mortally wounded by fire from German machine guns and a barrage of artillery and mortar fire. 2LT Lieurance’s courageous actions and extraordinary heroism that day earned him, at the cost of his life, the U.S. Army's second highest award for valor, the Distinguished Service Cross. Medals, Awards and Badges Distinguished Service Cross Distinguished Service Cross Citation (Synopsis) Second Lieutenant Howard R. Lieurance (ASN: 0-1302833), United States Army, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 135th Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in October 1943, in Italy. Second Lieutenant Lieurance's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 34th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
