Walter A. Galary On 14 October 1943, Private First Class Walter A. Galary was serving with the 179th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, Fifth U.S. Army. On that day, PFC Galary’s unit was in action against German forces at Salerno, Italy during the Italian Campaign. PFC Galary’s courageous actions and extraordinary heroism that day earned him the U.S. Army's second highest award for valor, the Distinguished Service Cross. On 28 May 1944, PFC Galary’s unit was in action against German forces at Anzio, Italy, when he was Killed in Action.
