William A. Richards On D-Day, 6 June 1944, Major William A. Richards was serving as Commander, 112th Engineer Combat Battalion, First U.S. Army. On that day, MAJ Richards’ unit was in action against German forces on Omaha Beach at Normandy, France, and was Killed in Action in the early hours of the landing. MAJ Richards’ courageous actions and extraordinary heroism that day earned him the U.S. Army's second highest award for valor, the Distinguished Service Cross.
