Albert Vadas Seaman, U.S. Navy Medal of Honor Recipient Spanish-American War Seaman Albert Vadas (he later changed his name to Wadas) (26 March 1877 - 3 October 1946) was a U.S. Navy sailor who received the U.S. military's highest award for valor, the Medal of Honor, for his heroic actions during the Spanish-American War. Albert Vadas was born 26 March 1877 in Austria-Hungary and later immigrated to the U.S. After entering the U.S. Navy, he was sent to fight in the Spanish-American War aboard the USS Marblehead. Medal of Honor Rank and organization: Seaman, U.S. Navy (Named changed to Wadas, Albert.) Citation: On board the USS Marblehead during the operation of cutting the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, 11 May 1898. Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, Vadas displayed extraordinary bravery and coolness throughout this period. Death and Burial Seaman Albert Vadas died on 3 October 1946. He is buried at Weehawken Cemetery in North Bergen, NJ. His headstone contains the name, Albert Wadas. |
