William Meyer Carpenter's Mate First Class, U.S. Navy Medal of Honor Recipient Spanish-American War Carpenter's Mate First Class William Meyer (22 June 1863 - 6 September 1926) was a U.S. Navy sailor who received the U.S. military's highest award for valor, the Medal of Honor, for his heroic actions during the Spanish-American War. William Meyer was born on 22 June 1863 in Germany. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy from the State of Illinois and served in the Spanish-American War as a crew member of the gunboat Nashville. Medal of Honor Rank and organization: Carpenter's Mate Third Class, U.S. Navy Citation: On board the USS Nashville during the operation of cutting the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, 11 May 1898. Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, Meyer displayed extraordinary bravery and coolness through this action. Death and Burial Carpenter's Mate First Class William Meyer died on 6 September 1926 at Chicago, IL. He is buried at Forest Home Cemetery in Forest Park, IL, in Section 49, Lot 299. |
