Franz Anton Itrich Chief Carpenter's Mate, U.S. Navy Medal of Honor Recipient Spanish-American War Chief Carpenter's Mate Franz Anton Itrich (26 November 1853 - 11 June 1933) was a U.S. Navy sailor who received the U.S. military's highest award for valor, the Medal of Honor, for his heroic actions during the Spanish-American War. Franz Anton Itrich was born on 26 November 1853 in Gross Katz, Germany. After entering the U.S. Navy, he was sent to fight in the Spanish-American War aboard the USS Petrel. Medal of Honor Rank and organization: Chief Carpenter's Mate, U.S. Navy Citation: On board the USS Petrel, Manila, Philippine Islands, 1 May 1898. Serving in the presence of the enemy, Itrich displayed heroism during the action. Death and Burial Chief Carpenter's Mate Franz Anton Itrich died on 11 June 1933. He is buried at San Francisco National Cemetery in San Francisco, CA, in Section OSA, Grave 83-5. |
