John Fitzgerald Gunnery Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps Medal of Honor Recipient Spanish-American War Gunnery Sergeant John Fitzgerald (17 March 1873 - 19 April 1948) was a U.S. Marine who received the U.S. military's highest award for valor, the Medal of Honor, for his heroic actions during the Spanish-American War. John Fitzgerald was born on 17 March 1873 in Limerick, Ireland. After entering the U.S. Marine Corps in 1894, he was sent to fight in the Spanish-American War. Medal of Honor Rank and organization: Private, U.S. Marine Corps Citation: For heroism and gallantry in action at Cuzco, Cuba, 14 June 1898. Death and Burial Gunnery Sergeant John Fitzgerald died on 19 April 1948 and was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY. |
