George Francis Berg Private, U.S. Army Medal of Honor Recipient Spanish-American War Private George Francis Berg (2 December 1868 - 27 November 1945) was a U.S. Army soldier who received the U.S. military's highest award for valor, the Medal of Honor, for his heroic actions during the Spanish-American War. George Francis Berg was born 2 December 1868 in Mount Erie, IL, and after entering the Army, he was sent to fight with Company C, 17th U.S. Infantry in the Spanish-American War. Medal of Honor Rank and organization: Private, U.S. Army, Company C, 17th U.S. Infantry Place and date: El Caney, Cuba, 1 July 1898 Citation: Gallantly assisted in the rescue of the wounded from in front of the lines and while under heavy fire of the enemy. Death and Burial Private George Francis Berg died on 27 November 1945. He is buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in South Portland, ME. |
