Arthur J. Forrest Sergeant, U.S. Army Medal of Honor Recipient World War I Sergeant Arthur J. Forrest (1 January 1896 - 30 November 1964) was a U.S. Army soldier who received the U.S. military's highest award for valor, the Medal of Honor, for his heroic actions during World War I. Arthur J. Forrest was born on 1 January 1896 in St. Louis, MO. After enlisting in the Army he was sent to France to fight in World War I. Medal of Honor Rank and organization: Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company D, 354th Infantry, 89th Division. Place and date: Near Remonville, France, 1 November 1918. Citation: When the advance of his company was stopped by bursts of fire from a nest of 6 enemy machineguns, without being discovered, he worked his way single-handed to a point within 50 yards of the machinegun nest. Charging, single-handed, he drove out the enemy in disorder, thereby protecting the advance platoon from annihilating fire, and permitting the resumption of the advance of his company. Death and Burial Sergeant Arthur J. Forrest died on 30 November 1964. He is buried at Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal, MO. |
