Edward Chambers Betts was a U.S. Army officer during World War I (WWI) through 1940. He was Captain, 123rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, 118th U.S. Machine Gun Battalion; G-3, 83rd Division; Captain and Adjutant, 47th U.S. Infantry Regiment; Captain and Adjutant, 29th U.S. Infantry Regiment; Captain, 45th U.S. Infantry Regiment (Philippine Scouts (PS) and Captain through Brigadier General in the Judge Advocate General (JAG) Department.
Betts was married to Mary Pleasants Hobbs of Athens, GA.
Brigadier General Betts was Judge Advocate for the European Theater of Operations from 1942-1946. He was involved in the court martial of Private Eddie Slovik, the last American soldier executed for desertion under fire.
Death and Burial
BG Edward Chambers Betts died of illness and a heart attack on 6 May 1946. He is buried at the Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial in Hamm, Luxembourg, Luxembourg. He was the last soldier buried in that cemetery.
