The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star, posthumously, to Private First Class Harvey O. Ewing, (ASN: 38099957), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with 359th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 12 November 1944, in the vicinity of Metz, France. During a counterattack, Private First Class Ewing advanced through intense hostile fire in an exposed position from which he could bring the most effective automatic rifle fire upon the enemy German force. At the risk of his life, he maintained his dangerous position and continued his fire until he was killed by shell burst. His courageous action so inspired his comrades that they held their ground and repelled the counterattack. His gallantry was in accordance with high military tradition.
